Worth knowing

  • Give Cusco two nights just to acclimatise. Lima straight to the trail is the worst thing you can do to yourself.
  • The Machu Picchu ticket and the train are bought separately. People forget, and end up with a ticket and no way to get there.
  • Dry season means sun by day and freezing at night. Layers, not one big coat.

Worth knowing

  • Google Maps will not give you walking directions in Korea. Naver or Kakao is not a preference, it is a requirement.
  • Buy a T-money card at the airport and top it up straight away. It gets you everywhere and buys your water.
  • A lot of museums close on Mondays. Check before you plan a day in Seoul.

Worth knowing

  • They drive on the left. Take an automatic for the first day and do not drive at night.
  • Safari bookings often want the full amount up front and will not refund it. Read the terms.
  • May to September is dry: the animals gather at water and are simply easier to see.

Worth knowing

  • Cash still matters. Small places and temples will not take a card.
  • There are almost no bins on the street. You carry your rubbish around all day.
  • Trains leave to the second. A minute late is late.

Worth knowing

  • It can be raining in the north and sunny in the south at the same time. Keep the plan loose.
  • Levada paths are narrow and wet. Flat-soled trainers will not do.
  • The road from the airport winds. If narrow roads worry you, take a bigger car with an automatic box.

Driving

Worth knowing

  • ZTL zones are a fine-generating machine. A hotel courtyard does not mean you may drive to it.
  • Italians leave in August themselves. Plenty of small restaurants are simply shut.
  • Churches want shoulders and knees covered. A thin scarf in the bag saves the day.
